A governing alternative

Keep your judgment.

The Keystone Compact is for citizens who believe liberty and responsibility still matter—and that truth should not change when party control does.

Free Lives. Honest Budgets. Responsible Government.

Rights for everyone. Favors for no one. Power with limits. Policy with sense.

A Personal Civic Project

The Keystone Compact is my personal effort to organize ideas about liberty, responsibility, government, and public life into a coherent framework. The views expressed here are mine. Agreement is welcome, disagreement is expected, and thoughtful common ground is the goal. The purpose is not to declare a final answer, but to make these principles clear enough to be tested, challenged, and improved.

What this is

Not a softer midpoint between fractured political tribes.

The Compact begins with a refusal: citizens should not have to trade judgment for belonging. The Keystone Test keeps that refusal practical by asking readers to examine power before defending party, personality, or tribe.

Free Lives

Personal liberty is the default. Rights mean little unless they also protect people we dislike, distrust, or disagree with.

Honest Budgets

Public promises have owners. Spending and tax choices should show the bill rather than handing it silently to the next generation.

Responsible Government

Government should be strong where it must be, limited where it should be, and humble where it has repeatedly failed.

Compassion Should Help People Stand

A safety net should catch people when they fall, not become a hammock no one wants to leave.

Category III begins by asking how a free society can help people through hardship without replacing agency with permanent management. The essay argues for stability and dignity, practical paths back to independence where possible, protection for those who cannot reasonably become self-supporting, and programs measured by whether people become safer, steadier, and more capable.

Keep the Test in View

Question power before defending party or tribe.

The Keystone Compact asks the same questions of every proposal, every candidate, and every governing coalition. The standard should survive changes in party, personality, beneficiary, and political fashion.

Maximum practical liberty. Minimum necessary coercion. Honest public accounting. Equal rules.

The public sequence

Category III is underway: liberty with responsibility.

Category I established the governing foundation. Category II carried it through debt, honest budgets, tax reform, and competitive markets. Category III now tests how compassion, health care, public promises, and personal medical liberty can protect people without abandoning responsibility or restraint.
